A War against the invisible enemy "Covid-19"Two years ago, if I was told there would be a world war where the entire human race risked elimination supposedly triggered by a “lethal bat”. I would have laughed so hard at such “gimmick”. The entire world is at war and there are no clear villains no matter how one spins it, the desire to survive is now paramount to all and sundry. Just like every other war, the “soldiers” feel the most impact. They stay awake so we may sleep, they go hungry so we may eat, they hurt so we may heal, they cry so we may laugh. And at times, they die so we can live.
By now, even the uninitiated should know the war I am talking about. It all started as a result of a “little disagreement between a ‘predator’ and a ‘supposed prey’ and the rest they say is history”. Now the hunters are now the hunted. From the bubbling city of Wuhan to the peaceful city of Paris to the Vatican City, to the Holy city of Mecca, even to the Queen’s palace, down to the presidential villa in Aso Rock, even the ever vibrant city of Lagos, no one is left out. Everyone has a feel of the war. It is the world war and survival is the hope of everyone. Right now, nothing matters more than preserving the “endangered species” which ironically is the homosapien. No wealth or penury matters, no socio-political or economic leanings matters, it doesn’t matter is identify as a binary gender or not, it is of least importance if you identify as a feminist or not, it does not even matter by what name you call God, you just wish Allah keeps you alive and Sango does not forsake you. In essence; all that matters right now is survival. And just like in every war, there will be those who do not believe the war is happening, there also will be those who peddle conspiracy theories as to what, why and how the war came about and whether the war is caused by the emission of radiation or how the war is the bringing into live all that was revealed in the Book of Revelation (this special set are the chicken littles who believe the sky will soon fall). Not to forget the ”elite” group in high places who use wars as an avenue of enriching themselves and a few close associates, you know? They seat at their round dinning tables to share the funds meant for our soldiers, leaving these gallant men to jostle for the crumbs that falls off their high tables, and as we were taught while growing; “you don’t talk while eating”, table manners they say it is. In wars, the most important do not seat in luxury offices or behind a screen or with a pen creating undercooked stories. They are at the war fronts and even though they are ill-equipped they fight still and hold their own, they do it for duty, pride and honor. Our battalion of soldiers (the entire medical team) has been in high spirits taking turns and keeping watch over us all. Even though “the night is dark and full of terror” they still walk through the valley where death is much around the corner. From dusk to dawn they are on the battle ground, not knowing how their loved ones fare in their absence. They can only hope they are alive and well, our favorite soldiers have asked us to do some basic things just to ensure the enemy doesn’t come into our homes like a thief in the night, have you been obeying them? If the price to pay is to obey every guideline as stated by our soldiers in order to help them do their jobs and ultimately keep us all alive, are you willing to pay it? Will you keep spreading unproven conspiracy stories about the war, while our soldiers pay the price even with their lives sometimes? Or will you choose to refrain from every irrelevant discussion till this war is over? Do you think the Chinese owe us all an explanation? Do you think this is just one big plan to “take over” the world? I can’t tell you what to do or not do but this I tell you; do not let the distractions distract you. Sooner or later this war too will be over just like every war then we will come back to every unsaid words and all other distraction we have refused to have. For now, just stay alive. I hope all those who are bereaved as a result of this war will some day find peace, I don’t know how you feel but I hope you find peace. To every fallen soldier who has died protecting us, we can never thank you enough. From every General and Admiral to the recruits and even the newly admitted cadets we say; thank you. No matter the outcome of this “war”, we all shall forever be indebted to you. Thank you for everything. We are at war, and this is a war we do not intend losing. Hi, Gbaleh. Great piece, Mr Costa. I love how you figuratively used soldiers as a replacement for those working in the health sector. Of a truth they are the real soldiers in these like these. About the conspiracy theories and all that, I think there are dumb and smart people, and everyone is entitled to his/her beliefs. Besides no knowledge is absolute, but rather relative. So it's okay for people to have different ideas and thoughts when events like this surface. A really brilliant piece once again. Do well to stay safe till the world is fine.
